English and Me

Hello, there! This is my very first post here. I think I should make a little introduction. My name is Arinda. I'm a college student from Universitas Kristen Satya Wacana. This blog is for my assignments. So I won't post anything besides my college stuffs. Now that you know a bit about me, let's get into the topic : English and Me!

It's kinda funny on how I recall any good or bad memories about my English learning. It might sounds stupid, but since I was only an elementary student, I get to learn English from games. Yes, games. A casual, light novel RPG kind of game. Well, just say every games I've played. I follow the game's story, and whenever I found a difficult word, I search it up in my English dictionary. That's how my vocabulary develop. Not only games, I also learned English from movies. My mom used to play Disney movies for me since I was 4 years old, everyday! I guess that also took a part on building my English listening skill. So yeah, I've been used to listen to English talks since I was a kid. Well, in conclusion, for me, learning English is fun. You can learn it in a fun way, your way, really! You can even learn it by listening to English songs and finding the meaning of the song. It's fun, and sometimes, can be inspiring! To be honest, some of my favorite songs inspired me to write short stories. Not in English, sadly. Maybe I'll try to make them in English, some other times. But I'm not confident enough to share them with everyone. I always love to hide my stuffs from people. Bad habit. But I tried to step away from my comfort zone and believe or not, I've submitted one of them to a writing contest. Wish my writing could get in top 100!

Another funny memory of mine, is when I was still a first year Junior High School student. I didn't realize my English ability yet, until the mid-term exam. I did my exam the same way as the majority of the class; do the test, finish the test, walk out, and forget all about the test. I didn't even double-check my answers. Yet I got almost perfect score, 99! The worst part is the school always shows our exam results on the announcement board. Everyone's gonna see your score, either it's good or bad. And believe me, the whole school falls into riot. Just kidding, I'm over dramatic. The real deal is some students believe that I made 1 wrong answer on purpose. Some even call me mad. Since that day, I was officially "famous". Even until I became 3rd year senior, some juniors still recognize me and greet me as if they've been knowing me since forever. I've never met them before.

That time, I was legit thinking, "Maybe English is my hidden talent and I need to improve it." So I asked my mom if I could take an English course. And that's when I'm being serious about English. That is also how I met a great English teacher. I'm a fast learner, and with his teaching and tricks, I'm kind of able to learn tenses. Believe me, if you understand it's concept, it wasn't that hard. We made a really good student-teacher relationship. His guide is what makes me believe that English is my passion, my purpose, and my goal. He inspires me to take English major, English Language Education, to be precise. Some says I'm good at theories.

Well, from all I've been talking about, I'm pretty sure you all know what skills I'm probably good at. I personally think I'm good at reading and listening. Haha, yeah, writing and speaking are "no-no" for me. Kinda ironic, knowing that I've been writing this much now. Maybe it's because I'm a shy person. I'm also more pessimistic than optimist. I don't even have any idea what should I'm talking about in this topic. Also, I barely talk in real life. No kidding. People tend to describe me as a "statue", judging on how silent I am. Some even think I'm an introvert. I don't even have any idea what type I am. But I can assure you, the more you know about me, you'll probably see me as a cat that have been snorting on 2 kilograms of catnip. Wild. (Yes, I love making unnecessary bad jokes. Yes, I'm embarrassed about that. No, I won't stop making them. Thank you.)

Well, I admit that I'm not really good at speaking. I might sound gibberish, sometimes. But that won't stop me from learning English. Life is all about learning. And I won't stop learning until I cannot anymore. It's just small weakness that you can wipe it off, by practicing. And nowadays, it's easy to find stuffs to help you practice, just by clicking and finding apps on your phone, as example. You practically can do anything you want! Well, as long as it's a good intention.

I think that is everything I want to share with you. Hope you find this post enjoyable! See you in another assignment!
